M4 reopens to traffic as firefighters deal with fire in industrial buildings between Newbury and Hungerford

Firefighters are fighting a fire near the M4 motorway in Berkshire today (Saturday, April 16th). Both the east and west lanes were closed between junction 13 and junction 14 due to the ongoing fire near Boxford in West Berkshire.

The highway was closed for about 15 hours. The national highways have confirmed that they are open again until 5.45 pm.

A spokesman for the Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “At 1:41 pm on Saturday, April 16, we received reports of a fire in an industrial building in Westbrook, Newbury. The Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service (RBFRS) teams from Newbury, Thiel and two are currently deployed, along with teams from the Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Services.

“Firefighters have identified a fire involving possible pyrotechnics and fireworks. Borders have been set up in places, but people have been urged to stay away from the area while emergency services deal with the blaze.

“Teams remain on the scene to deal with the fire. No casualties have been reported so far.”

Inrix, the traffic data company, said: “Allocation of traffic due to an earlier fire in a building in the M4 Westbound industrial building on J13 A34 (Cheeves / Newbury). Congestion up to A4 between Eddington and Donington and routes through Shefford Woodlands. All bars are open again. Cameras show that both sides reopened after a short delay to raise the cones. “
