M61 live: Traffic stops after “several vehicle crash” between Horwich and Bolton increases delays

Traffic on the M61 was stopped after an accident involving many vehicles.

Emergency services were called at the collision on the southern lane between junction six for Horwich and junction five for Bolton. This is the second accident to hit a section of the highway since an accident earlier this morning.

The first incident led to a “significant spill of hydraulic fluid”, which caused several miles of queues and long delays. Two of the three lanes remain closed, and the National Highways said the pavement is likely to need re-paving.

In a 9.22 update, the National Highways tweeted: “Traffic has been STOPPED on # M61 south between J6 (#Middlebrook) and J5 (for #Bolton) due to a collision of several vehicles. Emergency services are on site. Congestion is an upgrade of the approach. “

The Inrix Traffic Information Service said: “All traffic has been suspended and immobile due to an accident on the M61 Southbound on J6 A6027 De Havilland Way (Horwich). The accident occurred as part of delays caused by the spill between J5 and J4.”

“Two lanes closed, long delays and a queue of traffic for four miles due to a spill of hydraulic fluid on the M61 Southbound between the J5 A58 Snydale Way (Westhoughton) and the J4 A6 Watergate Lane (Farnworth). Congestion up to J6 (Horwich). There are also delays along the A6 to Four Lane Ends and on the Chorley New Road from Horwich to the Beehive Roundabout, as traffic avoids the motorway. Travel time is about 30 minutes. “
