Mallorca says the disinformation board will not track American citizens

Homeland Security Minister Alejandro Mallorca said on Sunday that his agency’s Orwellian “Disinformation Management Council” would not monitor U.S. citizens.

But Mallorca acknowledged that the administration could do a better job of announcing how the board will function, noting that it will investigate disinformation from Russia, China and cartels that smuggle people and drugs into the United States when some are perceived as a threat. for national security. Critics have criticized the board as a way for the federal government to restrict free speech.

CNN’s Dana Bash directly asked Mayorkas if American citizens would be monitored by DHS through the creation of the board.

“I still don’t know how this board will work and what it will do,” she told the head of internal security.

Mallorca replied: “What it is doing is working to ensure that the way we treat threats, the link between threats and acts of violence, is addressed without compromising freedom of expression, the protection of civil rights and civil liberties, the right to privacy. “

Bash pressed, “Will American citizens be monitored?”

Mallorca replied: “No, the board does not have any operational powers or capabilities.

“What it will do is gather best practices in dealing with the threat of misinformation from foreign cartels and disseminate these best practices to operators who have been dealing with this threat for years.

He also vouched for Nina Jankovic, who was chosen to lead the board as “extremely qualified”.

A strange video appeared on TikTok last week, in which Jankovic used Mary Poppins’ “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” tune to deal with misinformation.

The parody has been widely criticized, as has her ability to investigate real misinformation – given that she shamefully doubted the veracity of The Post’s reports on Hunter Biden’s laptop.

DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said Nina Jankovic was “extremely qualified” to run the Disinformation Bureau.

Critics of the disinformation bureau say it will be used to infiltrate the lives of private citizens and call for it to be de-financed.

“Certainly no American administration would ever use the power of government to judge the speech of the First Amendment to its own citizens. “Unfortunately, I was wrong,” Senator Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) Told DHS last week.

“Instead of defending our border or the American homeland, you have chosen to make the American police speech your priority.

Jankovic, in his strange turn as Mary Poppins in the February 2021 video, sings: “Information laundering is really quite ferocious.

“This is when the trader accepts some lies and makes them sound premature by telling them in Congress or in a mass channel, so the origin of the misinformation is a little less cruel,” she said.

Longtime Republican councilor Carl Rove told Fox News: “What the hell is going on here?

“This is important advice. His job is to help tackle misinformation filed in America by foreign actors, both government and non-government. And they put a political hack on it. “
