UPDATE: 10:45

A man was shot dead by police along Highway 5 near Barrier during the night, which closed the highway overnight.

In a press release from BC RCMP, Sgt. Janelle Schoyhet says police reacted on the highway south of the Barrier just before 10pm on Friday night after receiving a signal that a man had been left on the side of the road and had taken what appeared to be a “weapon”.

Schoyhet says there was an “interaction” between the man and the police officers in charge and the police shot and wounded the man. It is not clear what caused the police to shoot with the firearm (s), how many officers fired at the man or how many shots were fired.

In a press release, Schoyhet did not say whether the man actually had a weapon or what the weapon might be.

Police on the scene provided first aid to the man after the shooting, until paramedics arrived and he was transported to hospital. The extent of the man’s injuries was not reported.

No employees were injured in the quarrel.

Police have notified the British Columbia Office of Independent Investigations of the shooting. The IIO is led by a civilian police observer who investigates any police incident that results in injury or death. As the IIO is now investigating, Schoyhet says he will not disclose more details about the shooting.

Schoyhet says the Southeast Main Investigation Section is also conducting a simultaneous investigation into the penal code.
