How the fans fought against the ESL
The proposal for the European Super League was announced on Sunday, April 18, 2021. The plan was published late at night and it was appropriate that it was revealed under cover of darkness. The elite made a brazen attack on football.
Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool; Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham; Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid; Juventus, AC Milan and Inter Milan have agreed to join the closed league. The news was surreal to ordinary Mancunians getting to work that Monday morning. United fans felt betrayed and would not allow their club to be taken away from them.
The reaction to the proposal was unprecedented. The owners of each of the club’s founders – who may have underestimated the power of the fans due to naivety or arrogance – have been rude. They had committed a sin that would never be forgiven.
