Manitulin Island police chief has been found guilty of sexual assault

Wikwemicong tribal police chief has been found guilty of sexual assault.

Terry McCaffrey, who was removed when he was first indicted in January 2021, was convicted on April 25 in Gore Bay after a week-long trial in March. The police service serves the handed over Wiikwemkoong territory on Manitou Island.

There is a ban on publishing, which does not allow the publication of information that would identify the victim.

McCaffrey was charged with sexual assault after a woman claimed he grabbed her breasts in March 2019. In January 2021, provincial police launched an investigation into the historic charge.

The matter will be returned on May 10 to set a date for the verdict.
