Megan Markle tells the veterans that she misses Archie and Lily

The Duchess of Sussex said she missed her two young children, Archie and Lily, while attending the Invictus Games.

Megan made the confession while reading in front of a group of 12 children at a private event held at Zuiderpark on the second day of the event.

She told British Army veteran James Stride that she wanted to attend the reading because it meant she was around children, and they reminded her of her own home in California.

“Megan was quite talkative and told me she missed her children,” said James, one of Britain’s players at the Hague Games.

“She said she wanted to be with the children because she missed her own.”

The couple’s first trip to Europe is considered to be the longest, apart from Archie, three and ten-month-old Lily.

With temperatures in the 1960s, Megan had discarded her white woolen coat, which she wore to attend athletics because of her striped blazer. She was accompanied by her large bodyguard, who kept an eye on the Duchess as she happily posed for a selfie with fans.

They stayed at the couple’s home for £ 11 million in Montecito, California, while the couple traveled to the Netherlands.

James, 37, reads from the book “Hairy McLaughler” by a group of children in a tent organized by the British Embassy in the Netherlands.

James said: “Megan told me she was familiar with the book and the one she read to her own children. She was very friendly and the book was well known to her family.

She was accompanied by her large bodyguard, who kept an eye on the Duchess as she happily posed for a selfie with fans.

Two other security guards, dressed in sweatshirts with the name of their company “First Line”, also watched from a distance as Megan was flooded with well-wishers.

She happily posed for two selfies of women who waited until she left reading.

Megan was expected to read excerpts from her own book, The Bench, to a group of GB athlete children.

But instead, the book was chosen by 19-year veteran Stride because it was his favorite as a child.

James, who competes in rowing and powerlifting and has an I am Invictus logo tattooed on his leg, told Harry and Megan: “I think they are both fantastic and do so much to promote the games.”

Harry was seen embracing Dave Hanson, a former adviser to the Royal Army Engineer, who lost both his legs when he stood at the EID in Helmand in 2011.

Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex and Megan, Duchess of Sussex, spoke with a member of the US team on the second day of the Invictus Games 2020 in Zuiderpark on April 17, 2022.

After reading, he handed me a copy of Megan’s book and admitted that she had brazenly signed her name inside and presented it as a gift.

James, who served in the Royal Electromechanical Engineers, said he had previously met Prince Harry in 2007, when they both served in Afghanistan.

He said: “I was a car engineer and Harry came in with his car. I met him, but I don’t think he remembers me.

The British Council announces readings twice a day in the tent with a selection of more than a dozen books for readers to choose from – but not a copy of Megan’s book The Bench.

Meanwhile, a veteran friend of Harry’s said that the Duke of Sussex “returned to his own people” when he was at the Invictus Games.

Harry and Megan watched the action next to Jaco Van Gass, a Paralympian gold medalist and former Invictus athlete who suffered life-threatening injuries in the British Army.

Mr Van Gass left his home in South Africa to pursue a military career 16 years ago, but was hit by a grenade in Afghanistan in 2009 while serving in the Parachute Regiment and lost his left arm at the elbow.

He met Harry in 2011, when the duke joined the record team of wounded soldiers, he was part of this transition to the North Pole without support.

The 35-year-old said it was “amazing” to see Harry and Megan, adding that it was “wonderful” to catch up with them and they were “friendly as always”.

He said Harry had told him he was having a “really, really good time”.

Mr Van Gass said: “In principle, Invictus is his family.

“There are so many celebrities he hasn’t seen in a while, and again to all nations, just to catch up with them again.

“He went back to his own people, back to an environment where he was so natural and cared about.

“I think that’s the most important thing – this great depth of care he shows for the games.

“He’s just very down to earth, humble and just true to his word, he’s a very nice person.

“It’s amazing to think about his profile and who he is and how calm you can be with him.”

Prince Harry and Megan Markle, Duke and Duchess of Sussex, pose with athletes from the US and Iraq teams at the Invictus Games in The Hague, The Netherlands, Sunday, April 17, 2022.

Mr Van Gass said he spoke briefly with Megan.

“She’s having a good time,” he said. “She’s in really good shape and she really enjoys all the events and she sees … it’s so inspiring.

“Even the people on the volleyball court at the moment see all sorts of different injuries and just seeing them are active, smiles on their faces, camaraderie, all the teams are very friendly to each other.”

After her side kick to the royals in her speech, which mentioned “service”, Megan seemed very calm on Sunday morning when the couple arrived at the games.

Harry wore a fleece decorated with the Invictus logo and sand-colored trousers and shoes.

All the bodyguards – two of whom are believed to be officers from the Dutch Royal Defense Forces – stood in a protective circle around the entrance.

The other two, who wore Invictus jackets, are believed to be from the couple’s private security company.

With few people around, the bodyguards were calm and allowed spectators to walk past them to take pictures.

When one of the Invictus volunteers asked Harry if he could take a selfie, the prince said, “I don’t have time now and I’m going to take one of the exits.”

The couple watched the start of the athletics class before attending the volleyball event.

The couple is followed by a Netflix film crew that is making a documentary series as part of their Archewell deal for £ 100 million with the streaming giant.

A team of 30 people has been appointed to monitor the couple to gather material on what is expected to be a three-part series.

One of the organizers said that the Netflix team had arrived in carriers of six people with loaded boxes of equipment.

The crew of the film received chestnut bibs to help them stand out from the dozens of photographers covering the games, and was given exclusive access to the couple with a meeting behind the door with the athletes.

The shooting has already taken place, as Harry and Megan met with members of the Ukrainian team, who received repeated applause from other competitors.

Both Harry and Megan paid tribute to the courage of the contestants.
