Microsoft Corp. said on Thursday that it had stopped attempts to hack Russian military spies aimed at infiltrating Ukrainian, European and American targets.
In a blog post, the technology company said a group nicknamed Strontium used seven Internet domains as part of its efforts to spy on government agencies and think tanks in the EU and the United States, as well as Ukrainian institutions such as media organizations.
Microsoft did not identify any of the targets by name.
Strontium is Microsoft’s nickname for a group that others often call Fancy Bear or APT28, a hacker group affiliated with Russia’s military intelligence agency.
The Russian embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Ukraine has been hit by hacking attempts since Russian forces invaded the country in February.
