MLB Power Rankings: Twins, Angels and Yankees increase in May

We have a new number one this week and we will get to that – I covered them in this space last week anyway – but probably the biggest news of the week will be the hot series of three teams in particular. Two of them are in the top five in the Yankees and Angels. Let’s dive into the other big engine of the week.

Just a week ago, the Central American League had no teams over .500. Of course, it is always mandatory to have some fun with a small sample here at the beginning, but every other division already has at least one team at least four games over .500. The Padres were 10-7 and in fourth place!

AL Central still looks like the worst division in baseball and I expect that to be the case all season, but there was one team that came through the sidelines. We can probably omit derogatory phrases like, “this is a race to 83 wins!” because the Minnesota Twins are already 13-9, which is the pace of a full season of 96 wins. This move is due to the recent growth in which the Twins have won nine of their last 10 games.

They also have the ingredients of a team with endurance.

Rotation was a problem at the beginning of the season and even looked like a patchwork job, but it was so good. The starter twins have combined for a 2.62 ERA so far and this is one of their big off-season gains, Sony Gray, on the injured list. They even had to place Bailey Aubert (2.75 ERA in four starts) in Illinois before Sunday, and recruiter Josh Winder threw six zero innings. The twins got a good job from Chris Archer, Chris Padak and Dylan Bundy, while Joe Ryan looks like a candidate for Sai Young.

Kozar would be the weak point, but here it is quite adequate in the short term. Jhoan Duran has things almost as electric as anyone in baseball, and let’s keep in mind that relievers are easily the most traded item every July. With as aggressive as the previous office was last off-season, you can bet they will be just as aggressive in strengthening the bullpen this summer.

Speaking of an aggressive front office, the biggest move of the off-season was the surprise invasion of Carlos Correa. It started slowly, but now it is settling down and looking like the MVP it could be. In his last four games, Correa is 10 against 18 with five RBIs and five runs.

For any MVP discussion, however, it starts with Byron Buxton, as long as he stays on the field for a decent percentage of the time. We – I’m talking about all baseball fans because it’s a pleasure for all of us – were scared in Boston, but Buxton came back just a few days later and he’s still cooking. In 14 games, he scored .283 / .345 / .755 with four doubles, seven home runs, 12 RBIs and 13 runs, along with his usual incredible defense and base run.

While Max Kepler and Luis Araes deserve to be highlighted for their excellent offensive work among supporting cast members, the Gemini attack in general is indeed capable of better than it showed (and if Miguel Sano and Gary Sanchez find their way, example?).

It’s just that things are going pretty well in Minnesota right now, and there’s reason to be optimistic that the 2022 season is strong. They climbed five places below and in the top 10, just two weeks after disappearing in the 1920s.

1 Mets This week, several teams had a case for first place, but it goes to the only team in baseball that has won each series this season. From this point of view, the Mets are 7-0. 1 16-7 2 Blue Jays Kevin Gaussman has 41 outs and zero walks so far this season. Youza. 2 15-8 3 Yankees That’s right, they have won nine in a row and have the best baseball record. They have defeated lower talent, but so do the great teams. Do you want a test? Now the Yankees are heading to Toronto for a series to watch. 5 16-6 4 Dodgers Honestly, they are still the best team, but the loss of a series of Diamondbacks must have consequences, otherwise all contenders will be left with the impression that this is acceptable. I just can’t let this stand. 3 14-7 5 Angels If Taylor Ward’s breakthrough is real and prolonged, sacred smoke, it is a crime with great effect. And what about this rotation with Noah Sindergaard, Patrick Sandoval and Michael Lorenzen, all bullet shooters? Fun and great team so far. 7 15-9 6 Giants They have lost three of four, also from bad teams, but after a day off the Giants get a crack against the Dodgers. Deleting from two games there can erase all bad memories. 3 14-8 7 Padres Mani Machado sets MVP numbers and this is what stars do when they need to reduce their groin with other stars. In addition, Eric Hosmer hits .382 / .447 / .579 – just as we all knew he would. – 15-8 8 Brewers Speaking of things we all knew was going to happen, Eric Lauer leads the rotation in the autism rate (34 in 23 1/3 innings!). 3 15-8 9 Gemini Hey people “Rays never lose deals”, can we talk about the Nelson Cruz trade? You know the one that sent Joe Ryan to the Twins for a few months on Cruz? 5 13-9 10 Cardinals I discussed their weak schedule last week. This week, they lost two of three to the Mets and parted ways with the Diamondbacks. цк, цк. 5 13-9 11 Rays We know Mike Zunino won’t hit the average, but he still had 137 OPS + last year, thanks to 33 homers in 333 at-bat. This year? .093 / .130 / .186. This is -3 OPS +. Yes, negative. 2 12-10 12 Marlins Jorge Soler have scored twice in their last three games and won 2 against 5 on Sunday. What if he gets hot levels for 2019? While we are here, can we order a 2018 version of Jesús Aguilar? I guess we shouldn’t be greedy. …
