SOUTH JAMAICA, Queens (WABC) – What was supposed to be Mother’s Day, full of laughter and smiles, has become a worry and a broken heart for a family.
Police said a man behind the wheel of a stolen dump truck made a decision on Sunday morning around 8:30 a.m. that led a woman to fight for her life.
Police blocked 120th Avenue after the driver of a stolen dump truck tried to make a U-turn in a dead end.
“He hit that white BMW. He hit about three, four times,” said Sharon Brown.
There was some sort of quarrel, and the woman walked over to the truck, trying to stop him. The woman drove away and seconds later the driver pressed the gas, collided with a parked jeep, which collided with another car – squeezing the 48-year-old mother between them.
The woman’s daughter then called for help as the driver took off, leaving the mother to fight for her life.
While the victim was fighting for his life in the hospital, police found the damaged truck at the front end a mile in front of a church.
“I saw this construction truck here, but I just thought it was a truck doing some work,” said Lena Wilson.
The video surveillance footage shows the driver calmly leaving the car.
Police said the truck was stolen by a construction company and the investigation is ongoing.
The collision came just days after Mayor Eric Adams cracked down on reckless drivers in response to a spike in pedestrian incidents.
