Aleix Espargaro celebrates home pole position for Catalonia’s MotoGP in 2022 in hot and slippery Barcelona.

The Aprilia racer will join the front row on Sunday from Francesco Banya (Ducati) and Fabio Quartararo (Yamaha).

Reigning champions Quartararo and Bagnaia led the battle against Espargaro, leading the Aprilia competitor with a tire change in the middle of the session, when the top five were covered by just 0.090s.

Bagnaia then made the first lap under 1m 39s in the afternoon to grab six with two minutes left.

But the fastest since Friday afternoon and after setting a new lap record on Saturday morning, Espargaro responded with a new lap lap record to be just 0.045 seconds ahead of the Ducati driver.

Mark Marquez was absent after choosing to undergo a fourth operation on his right arm. The eight-time world champion has been replaced by HRC test rider Stefan Bradl.

According to Marquez’s teammate Paul Espargaro, the new chassis and pendulum that Marquez was trying on has now been handed over to Takaaki Nakagami by LCR.

Reigning world champion Fabio Quartararo returns to the scene of his “wardrobe failure” in 2021 with a new two-year contract with Yamaha in his pocket and leads the MotoGP standings with eight points ahead of Aleix Espargaro of Aprilia.

Enea Bastianini broke away with 28 points from the top after falling in Italy, as last week’s winner Francesco Banya climbed to fourth place, but still 41 points behind Quartararo.

An official post-race test will take place on the track in Barcelona on Monday.

Jorge Martin will miss the test and will undergo surgery to treat nerve problems in his right arm.
