REALY, North Carolina – Officers shot dead a man Saturday afternoon who was throwing Molotov cocktails and setting fire to cars near a police station in Raleigh, North Carolina, authorities said.

The confrontation began after a police officer saw a man set fire to cars in a parking lot near the district station around 1:20 p.m., police chief Estella Patterson told a news conference.

The policeman called for help and three other police officers came to the rescue, she said, and officers ordered the man to stop. Patterson said the man continued to throw Molotov cocktails, eventually throwing one near an officer close to him.

“After that, several officers fired their weapons and the person was hit several times,” Patterson said.

Police then removed the man from two vehicles that were engulfed in flames and attempted to save his life, Patterson said. He was rushed to a hospital by paramedics, but died. He was not identified immediately.

The body cameras were active, as were the cameras in front of the police station that filmed the events, Patterson said, adding that he did not have any immediate information on the number of shots fired or how much they hit the man.

She thanked the firefighters for their quick arrival and extinguishing the flames.

Although the boss did not give details about the burned vehicles, news photos show that a police car with something that looked like a blackened and badly damaged engine compartment was towed.

The police chief said the investigation was ongoing and more details about the shooting would be announced in a report in the coming days.

The FBI has been notified in accordance with the department’s policy, Patterson added, noting that the findings of the investigation will be passed on to the Wake County Attorney’s Office.

The shooting took place near the department’s southeastern county station in Raleigh, the capital of North Carolina. Police, firefighters and other emergency vehicles stormed the street afterwards, and the section of road remained closed for several hours as the investigation continued.
