Neighbors say safety concerns have not been taken into account in the area where teenager Burnaby was killed by a truck

Residents of the Burnaby neighborhood, where a 14-year-old was hit and killed by a dump truck on Thursday, have said they have been expressing security concerns in the area for months.

The collision took place around 3:30 pm on 11th Avenue near 16th Street, an area near a massive construction site and two schools.

Neighbor Abdullah Dukuli told Global News that his cousin was at home at the time and rushed to the scene.

Duculi believes the victim and two friends were returning from school and may have been startled by a barking dog.

This is not the first time a pedestrian has been hit in the area recently. An 18-year-old girl was hit nearby in November and escaped without serious injuries.

Neighbors told Global News that they had raised the issue many times with officials.

“There were a lot of reckless drivers on this construction site. “I was emailing the city, talking to the RCMP, talking to the Burnaby regulations, and no one has actually done anything to make it safer,” neighbor Stacy Wallwer told Global News.

“Safety is our top priority. While the incident took place on a public street outside our construction site, we have launched our own investigation and will work with city staff to explore further ways to reduce the risk of trucks entering and leaving our site, ”said Ledingham McAllister & Marcon. Construction in a statement.

The company added that the driver of the truck, who worked for a trading partner, was “crushed and in shock”.

The Burnaby RCMP says the driver remained on the scene and is cooperating with police. Drugs or alcohol are not thought to have been the factors in the clash.

“They explore a number of areas of investigation roads, some of which include distractions that may have been in place, some of which may include road layout, including vehicle obstacles, visibility, and road conditions.” . said Brett Cunningham.

It rained a lot yesterday and it was wet.

The identity of the victim has not been made public.
