News of COVID-19 in Ontario: the province reports 10 new deaths; the lowest positivity since March

Ontario reported 10 new deaths from COVID-19 on Sunday as the number of people in intensive care increased slightly and the positive test results reached their lowest point in more than a month.

The health ministry says nine of the deaths uncovered on Sunday occurred in the past 30 days, with another death occurring before that period.

Two of Sunday’s deaths involved residents of the long-term care system.

147 deaths have been reported in the last week and 443 in the last 30 days.

As of March 2020, 12,972 deaths have been reported in Ontario.

The total hospital data released on Sunday is incomplete, but the health ministry said there were 207 COVID-19 patients in hospital intensive care units across the province, up three from Saturday and 30 from a week ago.

Ninety people were breathing with a ventilator, two down from Saturday and one from a week ago.

Test positivity, a less important indicator than before in the pandemic, as access to free testing is limited, fell to 12.2% on Sunday, based on 12,827 tests.

This is the lowest positive reading observed in Ontario since March 22.

The average positivity last week was 13.5 percent.

The Ontario COVID-19 Scientific Advisory Table says wastewater monitoring data show that the virus is spreading in all regions of the province, with the most significant declines in northern, central Ontario east of the GTA and eastern part of Ontario.

Of the 1938 cases of COVID-19 confirmed by PCR testing on Saturday, the health ministry said 220 involved unvaccinated or partially vaccinated people, 339 involved people with two doses of vaccine, 1,285 involved people with three doses of vaccine and 94 participated. people whose vaccination status is unknown.

The province says 16,246 doses of COVID-19 vaccine were given on Saturday.

Of these, 912 were first doses, 1,303 were second doses, 2,326 were third doses, and 11,705 were fourth doses.

In all age groups, 84.5% of the Ontario population had at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine, 81.4% had at least two doses, and 49% had at least three doses of vaccine.

The numbers used in this story are in the Ontario Department of Health’s daily epidemiological summary COVID-19. The number of cases for each city or region may differ slightly from that reported by the province, as local units report figures at different times.
