The rocket was fired from Sunan, an area of the North Korean capital Pyongyang, the Joint Chiefs of Staff of South Korea said.
The launch is the first for North Korea since a military parade late on April 25th in which leader Kim Jong Un vowed to step up the development of his nuclear weapons.
Among the weapons on display at the Pyongyang parade were the Hwasong-17 intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), numerous giant missile launchers and a submarine-launched ballistic missile.
“True peace can be trusted with national dignity and national sovereignty can be guaranteed by a powerful self-defense force that can defeat the enemy,” Kim said in a statement issued by the state’s Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) after the parade. .
He said his nuclear mission’s first mission was “to stop the war”, but if anyone tried to take away our country’s core interests, our nuclear forces would have no choice but to carry out their second mission. He did not specify what this second mission would be.
Wednesday’s test is the 13th for North Korea of the year, including one on March 16, which is expected to fail.
By comparison, he conducted only four tests in 2020 and eight in 2021.
Among this year’s tests was the March 24 launch of the ICBM, North Korea’s first test of the weapon in more than four years.
This is an evolving story.
