Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Steet signs bill banning Texas-style abortions six weeks later

It cannot be said that he is not a man of his word. Less than a month after vowing to “ban abortions” in his state, Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Steet signed a measure Tuesday modeled on Texas’s overtly restrictive legislation that bans abortions after six weeks of pregnancy. “I’m proud to sign SB 1503, the Oklahoma Heart Rate Act in law,” Stitt tweeted, accompanying a photo shoot where he signed the bill. “I want Oklahoma to be the most pro-life state in the country because I represent all four million Oklahoma residents who want to protect the unborn to a great extent. The measure also allows ordinary citizens to sue up to $ 10,000 abortion providers or anyone who helps a woman have an abortion. It will take effect immediately, hours after the Oklahoma Supreme Court rejected an urgent request to suspend the bill. Stitt’s signing comes a day after Politico revealed that the Supreme Court is moving to overturn Roe v. Wade, and less than a month after the Oklahoma governor signed a bill making abortion a crime punishable by up to decade in prison. The law, signed on April 12th, is expected to take effect this summer.
