Ontario NDP leader Andrea Horvatt tested positive for COVID-19 just before the election

Ontario NDP leader Andrea Horvat tested positive for COVID-19 just two weeks before the provincial election.

Horvath said she tested positive in a quick test Thursday morning.

“Like many others in this pandemic, I tested positive for COVID-19 this morning,” Horvat tweeted.

“We are doing everything we can to keep everyone safe.”

Like many others in this pandemic, I tested positive for COVID-19 this morning. We do our best to keep everyone safe. I was looking forward to seeing people in Northern Ontario. We will have to make adjustments, but I will continue to connect with people as safely as I can. #ONpoli

Horvat’s diagnosis comes in the middle of a provincial election campaign, just a day after Mike Schreiner, the leader of the Ontario Green Party, tested positive for COVID-19.

“Andrea’s greatest strength is meeting people and connecting with them where they are. She listens, she cares and that’s obvious. “We are really disappointed that we will lose this in a few days,” the Ontario NDP said in a statement.

The party added that it plans for contingencies related to COVID-19 and will continue with virtual events, as well as relying on its candidate team.

Horvat had to report to Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, today, but is now campaigning remotely from a hotel in Ottawa, following public health tips.

Horvat will miss a campaign tour of planned stops in several cities in northern Ontario in the coming days, as current provincial public health rules require people to isolate themselves for five days after the onset of COVID-19 symptoms for the first time or after a positive test result, whichever comes first.

Liberal leader Stephen Del Duca tested negative for COVID-19 on Thursday morning, according to a party statement.

“He is asymptomatic and feels great and wants Mike and Andrea to recover quickly,” the statement said.

Progressive Conservative leader Doug Ford also tested negative, according to the party.
