Ontario reports 1,116 hospitalizations, 12 deaths due to COVID-19 on Saturday

Ontario reported 1,116 hospitalizations and 12 new deaths due to COVID-19 on Saturday.

Hospitalizations on Friday decreased from 1,165 on Thursday and 1,392 just a week ago.

According to the Ministry of Health, 50% of the hospitalized people were admitted specifically to treat symptoms caused by the virus, while the rest were admitted for other reasons and then tested positive.

Of the 160 patients hospitalized, they need intensive care, which is three less than the previous day, according to the province. Eighty patients need the help of a ventilator to breathe.

Of those in the intensive care unit, 39% were admitted for COVID-19, while the rest were admitted for other reasons and then tested positive for the virus.

The province reported at least 1,221 new cases of COVID-19 through limited PCR tests, with 12,077 tests completed the day before. Due to the limitations of the tests, the actual number of new cases on a daily basis is likely to be much higher than reported, officials said.

The percentage of positive tests for the whole province is 8.9 percent.

New deaths reported on Saturday raised the official death toll in the province to 13,159.
