Manchester United insists that the Glazers will not be afraid to sell the club after the last protest of the fans.

But the club’s security officials and police fear that a staunch group of supporters wants to create large-scale riots around the club before the end of the season. On Friday, a small group of fans calling themselves “1958” staged a protest against Florida-based club owners and players with poorer results at United’s Carrington training complex ahead of Saturday’s game against Norwich.

Although the demonstration was peaceful and on a small scale, intelligence gathered by Greater Manchester police revealed intent to cause more disturbances in the final weeks of the season. Hundreds of United fans stormed Old Trafford last May, forcing a high-profile clash at the end of the season with Liverpool to be postponed.

Several employees were injured and fans were arrested – and police believe the chances of an event of this magnitude are possible. Old Trafford officials are concerned that the hardline of United’s followers intends to try to push the Glazers out of English football.

And they fear they will once again resort to violent riots in an attempt to protest American owners, who have been unpopular since their takeover of the club for £ 790 million in 2005. Security has been stepped up in the homes of players and key club officials. including new CEO Richard Arnold, who is considered a target.

Arnold’s predecessor, former Executive Vice President Ed Woodward, was despised by many fans and blamed for United’s nine-year decline following the retirement of legendary boss Sir Alex Ferguson. In January 2020, Woodward’s luxury home in Cheshire was attacked by a mob of fans who used signal lamps and spray paint to damage the property in protest against him and the Glaser family.

But a senior United source said the Glazers, who also own the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ American football team, have no plans to sell the club despite widespread opposition to their long-distance ownership. A source said: “The family has never wavered in its commitment to retain ownership of United and, as far as the club knows, nothing has changed.

“They have seen a similar protest before and although they would prefer better relations with the entire United fan base, they will not be expelled by this kind of opposition.

This position seems to be supported by multimillion-dollar plans to redevelop Old Trafford and the training ground, which have lagged behind rival clubs’ facilities in recent seasons.
