Priti Patel and law enforcement officials have advised not to publicly support Boris Johnson over the “party” fine.

All other cabinet ministers, including Dominic Raab, the justice minister, have issued public support for Mr Johnson.

“The prime minister accepted the decision of the Metro and apologized. I fully support the Prime Minister and the Chancellor as they focus on maintaining the United Kingdom’s international leadership against Russian brutality in Ukraine and ensuring our recovery from the British people’s pandemic at home, “Raab tweeted.

Liz Truss, the foreign minister, who has been widely nominated as a contender in any future Conservative leadership race, said Mr Johnson and Mr Sunak had her “100 per cent support”.

Ben Wallace, who played a leading role in Britain’s response to the invasion of Ukraine, said he could “understand the anger” over the fixed notices of punishment.

But he added: “No doubt many will want to focus on this issue, but at the moment the war in Ukraine is an urgent challenge and this prime minister is leading the international response. As Minister of Defense, he gave me his full support in providing the requested and desperately needed assistance. He has my full support. “

As of Wednesday, 67 lawmakers either issued their own statements of support or shared positive comments about Mr Johnson’s recent fine.
