A Surete du Quebec police car was seen in Montreal on Wednesday, July 22, 2020. Quebec police are warning people in the city of Madeleine-Center to stay in their homes after reports that a polar bear was spotted in the area.

Quebec police are warning people in Madeleine Center to stay in their homes following a report that a polar bear has been spotted in the area.

The city, located on the Gaspe Peninsula, is less than 300 km north of the New Brunswick border and is separated from the northern parts of Quebec by more than 100 km of water.

Police spokesman sergeant. Stefan Tremblay says a citizen has reported the polar bear to wildlife officials who have asked police to ensure the safety of society until they arrive.

Tremblay says security officials arrived and dealt with the situation before 2 p.m. Saturday.

The province’s Department of Forests, Wildlife and Parks says it has yet to confirm whether the spotted animal is in fact a polar bear.

Polar bears have been spotted from time to time in the coastal areas of Quebec’s lower north coast, about 500 km north of central Madeleine.
