Easter Sunday was in favor of Jordan Spit for the second season in a row, with Spiet winning his first event on the PGA Tour in more than a year, capturing the legacy of RBC 2022 with effort coming from behind. Spieth (-13) was three behind, entering a 4-round lead, but scored a 5-under 66 on Sunday to take the club’s lead and eventually overtake Patrick Cantley in the first hole in the playoffs for a sudden death for victory.
After scoring eagles on the 2nd and 5th to start his round with great momentum, Spieth jumped to 13 less with a bird on the 8th. A few gods later he again fought for first place in the rankings; however, a bird on the 13th saw Spieth regain momentum, and another on the 18th – where Spieth missed an 18-inch shot to close lap 3 – sent him to the club with the lead.
Cantlay Birds on the 17th to coincide with Spieth, but failed to go lower, scoring a tie on the 18th to force the tournament to die suddenly in Harbor Town. Spieth and Cantlay found the hopper in the first hole for the playoffs, but while Spieth easily knocked his shot from the edge of the hopper and subsequently sank a 6-inch nominal shot for a fantastic up-and-down shot, Cantlay was forced to dig up his buried ball, exceed the hole and missing a nominal tie for a tie.
“I won this golf tournament without a shot. It’s one of the worst tournaments I’ve ever played in,” Spiet told CBS after the round. “I just tried to stay firm with that, to be really positive in the last nine today. After a few missed short runs, I made one at 13 and it really calmed me down and just gave me a chance at 18. I’m most proud of the way – I’m pretty negative, after missing one inclusion here, I got lazy yesterday – I’m glad I didn’t influenced him [today]”
It’s been more than a year since Spieth last won the PGA Tour before taking the Texas Open last Easter Sunday before the Masters 2021. Sunday marked his second victory since the 2017 Open, but the 13th in his young career. Before its three-year drought, Spieth broke down from 2015-17, winning three major tournaments (2015 Masters, 2015 US Open, 2017 Open) along with the 2015 Tour Championship and six other events during that period.
Spieth joined RBC Heritage after missing out on Augusta National’s cut this year, a performance that clearly motivated him to return a week later.
“Last week was really deadly for me: my favorite tournament in the world without playing at the weekend. So, I came in and worked very hard here … I felt really good doing a punch that mattered at 18 in the regulations there, “said Spiet.” … It feels amazing. “
As for what lies ahead for Spieth, he said he usually has a lot of faith in his father-in-law, so that builds his confidence to be able to win an event, even though he has been battling the stick all week.
In terms of continuing his already tradition of winning at Easter, next year may mark the biggest such victory of his career, given that Easter next year falls on the same Sunday as the last round of the 2023 Masters.
“It’s a good mood,” said the 2015 green jacket winner with four more places in the top 3 of Augusta National. “I guess I didn’t actually put two and two together. This is great. What an amazing day.
There is one more year left. So far, Spieth has several autographs to sign.
