A teenager was detained after he tried to attack police with a weapon, as a “suspicious object” was found in downtown Rochdale.
A huge police response had arrived at the scene on Dane Street at around 3:10 a.m. this Thursday. The officers were informed of a “suspicious object”.
Police found the object and a large cordon was set “as a precaution.” Police officers “collided” with a man with a weapon at the scene, GMP said.

A 17-year-old man was then detained. Investigations are ongoing.
Specialists remain on site this morning and several major roads remain glued. Manchester Road, Dane Street, the Esplanade and the Gate of St. Mary are closed.

In a statement, a GMP spokesman said: “At around 3:10 a.m. on Thursday, April 21, 2022, we received a report of a suspicious object on Dane Street, Rochdale. Officers were present and found a suspicious object. As a precaution, the cordon is in place and specialists are present. Members of the public have been asked to avoid the area.
“During the initial reaction, officers were confronted with a man with a weapon. A 17-year-old man was detained safely. The investigation is ongoing.”
