Russian authorities said Sunday that weapons provided by the United States and its allies were aimed at a military airport near the Ukrainian port city of Odessa.
In a statement via the social media platform Telegram, Moscow’s defense ministry said its forces had used high-precision Onyx missiles to hit the airport.
Odessa Regional Governor Maxim Marchenko said in a video posted online that the attack was carried out from the Crimean peninsula, according to Reuters.
The press service noted that the Russian Ministry of Defense also said that it had launched an attack in the Kharkiv region, shooting down two Ukrainian Su-24m bombers in the process.
This came after the office of President Nancy Pelosi said on Sunday that the California Democrat and other US lawmakers were in the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, to meet with President Vladimir Zelensky amid Moscow’s ongoing invasion of his country.
When asked later at a press conference in Poland that the United States was sending additional aid to Ukraine without provoking a response from Russia, Pelosi said the United States “should not be harassed by hooligans.”
Russia is trying to legitimize control of Kherson with a pro-Moscow administration, the United Kingdom told Pelosi after Zelensky’s meeting: “Don’t be harassed by bullies.”
“Let me talk about myself. … Do not be harassed by bullies. If they make threats, you can’t back down. That’s my view on this, “Pelosi said.
President Biden announced last month that the United States would send another $ 800 million in military aid to Ukrainian forces designed to fight invading Russian forces in the Donbass region of eastern Ukraine.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which began on February 24, killed thousands on both sides and forced some 5.4 million refugees to flee the country.
