Russian state energy giant Gazprom has halted all gas supplies to Germany through its Nord Stream 1 pipeline, citing maintenance reasons and raising fears that speculators could take advantage and push prices up again.
“Nord Stream deliveries are completely suspended as preventive work on a gas compressor unit begins today,” Gazprom said in a brief statement. Entsog, the pipeline’s operator, announced that gas supplies had been cut shortly before 6 a.m.
Gazprom claims that the three-day works at the compressor station should be carried out after every 1,000 hours of operation.
Klaus Mueller, the head of Germany’s energy regulator, said the shutdown was likely a bid by Moscow to threaten an already overheated energy market.
