There was a time when Sam Howell was considered a contender for the first quarterback taken in the 2022 draft, but his last season in North Carolina was not as impressive as they had hoped, and he was sixth out of the board.
Howell went to the commanders with the first choice of the fifth round and will start his professional career as a reserve cop for Carson Wentz. It may not be the way he originally drew things, but Howell said he still feels like he’s in the right place.
“It was a little stressful, but at the same time I trusted God,” Howell told ESPN.com’s John Keeme. “I was waiting for a call and I’m glad Washington called. This is the perfect place for me. This is a team I wanted to play for all the time, so I’m passionate. “
Howell said he was “excited to go to a place where I can sit and learn from someone and see what it’s like to be a professional.” Wentz’s ability to turn things around after a few years of decline will determine whether Howell has a chance to move up the depth chart at any point in the near future.
