Science North seems to have a more permanent local presence

By expanding its presence, Science North employees believe it can develop tourism locally

As part of a pilot project, Science North has officially opened a new local space in the hope of having a more permanent presence at Sault Ste. Marie.

The space is intended to be a staff resource for Science North staff at the moment and was opened by cutting the ribbon on Friday.

Science North today announced plans to expand its presence at Sault Ste. Marie through the Programming and Promotion Center as part of his two-year pilot project.

For nearly 40 years, Science North has shared its unique experience in Northern Ontario through long-standing partnerships in various communities, including Sault Ste. Marie. Science North hosts annual science festivals, permanent and traveling exhibits, educational and information programs, and summer science camps at Sault Ste. Marie.

Extending this success, Science North intends to investigate a more permanent presence at Sault Ste. Mari area. The Science Center plans to expand its reach in the Algoma region through a two-year pilot project that will establish a programming and contact center that will: staff three to five Science North Bluecoats; increase engagement in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) through improved educational programs; building information events and initiatives; and to support partners in achieving or exceeding their attendance, revenue and engagement goals. In addition, Science North will continue to partner with local communities and organizations in the region to increase STEM education, experience and entertainment opportunities.

This long-term presence in Sault Ste. Marie, located at 2A-875 Queen Street East, will have a significant economic impact and will be a key driver of growth in northeastern Ontario. With the enlargement, Science North will support education and labor market development by developing STEM skills, expanding partnerships and collaboration, developing new audiences and events, deepening partnerships and engagement with local communities and audiences, and piloting the feasibility of permanent place in Sault Ste. Marie.

Moving forward to summer, Science North will equip this new program to work with a small team of Bluecoats to support the extensive summer programming at Sault Ste. Marie region and beyond.
