Shooting while driving in Philadelphia kills a man; civilians shoot at suspects in Germantown

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) – Two Philadelphia civilian police officers fired their weapons Sunday night after witnessing a shooting that killed a man, according to officials.

It happened around 6:42 pm near the intersection of East Pastorius and Baynton Street, while District 14 officers were investigating an unrelated murder in the Germantown area.

Investigators say a dark gray or silver Nissan jeep stopped at the block and two or three suspects started shooting at a 31-year-old man walking down the street.

Police said the police car was also hit.

“The officers were in an unmarked vehicle in the wake of the shooting, and in fact their car was hit once,” said Philadelphia Police Inspector DF Pace. “They were not sure if they were in an ambush or if there was another shooting. They then identified the vehicle and returned fire. “

Investigators say the suspects fired 27 bullets and hit the victim 15 times.

The victim was taken to a district hospital by police, where he later died.

Two police officers fired approximately nine shots.

Investigators say police bullets did not appear to have injured anyone, but the whole incident is under investigation.

“This is an area that has been affected by gun violence in recent times, and officers have been deployed specifically to monitor some previous killings,” Pace said.

No arrests have been made.
