“SLED agents are investigating a shooting at the Cara’s Lounge in Hampton County this morning that killed at least nine people,” the SLED said in a statement. “There are currently no casualties.
The CNN affiliate WTOC-TV reported that the salon was hosting an Easter party when the shots echoed. There were people inside and outside the hall when the shooting began, and some even had to jump into nearby ditches to avoid being hit, the WTOC reported.
“It was scary. “We were just trying to get to safety,” Jasassi Williams told the WTOC. “We didn’t know where the shots were coming from. So we just ran to try to get to safety, and then we fell, and we just tried to get to safety because everyone was running and screaming.”
The Hampton County Sheriff’s Office has asked the SLED to investigate the shooting, according to the SLED, and additional information will be released when it becomes available.
Furman is about 50 miles north of Savannah, Georgia.
There were two shootings in South Carolina this weekend, with no fatalities in any of the incidents on Sunday afternoon. The other mass shooting took place at the Columbiana Center Mall in Colombia. Fourteen people were injured in the shooting, and one was arrested. There was another shooting in Pittsburgh early Sunday, in which two people were killed and several others were injured at a big party. All three shootings also follow the scourge of gun violence that has plagued the United States for the past few weeks. To date, there have been more than 130 mass shootings this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive.
