- Senator Elizabeth Warren said the student debt crisis was caused by a “deliberate political decision.”
- She mentioned tax cuts that Democrats have criticized in the past for benefiting the rich.
- Biden is close to a relief decision that is likely to be announced in July or August.
Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren believes politics is to blame for the $ 1.7 trillion student debt crisis.
“Can we all just take a deep breath and admit that the $ 1.7 trillion in student loan debt didn’t just fall from the sky?” Warren said during a student debt roundtable on Wednesday at the federation’s group offices. AFL-CIO. “It didn’t just happen as an act of burden, it didn’t just happen because of age, it happened because of deliberate political decisions to invest in tax cuts for the richest Americans and get paid for it by reducing our children’s education. . “
Warren was referring to the general tax policy that Democratic lawmakers have criticized in the past for benefiting corporations and the richest Americans. She stressed that along with the union leaders present at the roundtable, effective policies are those that help those working in the country.
“Mr. President, the workers are taking care of the student loan debt,” Warren added.
Even before Warren became an MP, she was involved in the student loan industry as she helped set up the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and worked as a senator with the Student Loan Abuse Detection Agency, which encouraged borrowers to take on more. debt than they could afford to pay off. She was also one of the leading lawmakers, urging President Joe Biden to forgive a $ 50,000 student debt to a borrower – something she proposed during her presidential campaign but has not yet been implemented.
Biden is reportedly currently considering $ 10,000 in relief for borrowers earning less than $ 150,000 a year, and a final decision is likely to be announced in July or August, closer to the end of the student loan break after 31 August. Warren and some of her fellow Democrats believe that $ 50,000 is the amount that will relieve most people while helping to bridge the gap in racial wealth.
While Democrats are urging Biden to prioritize the issue and use his executive power to reduce the burden of student debt, Republican lawmakers rejected the idea, saying the president should not ease the debt of all federal borrowers. A senior Republican on the House of Representatives education committee, Virginia Fox, recently said Biden “works as if he could issue any kind of decree to forgive student loans, even if it means exercising power he doesn’t have.”
Biden has not confirmed public relief, but he told reporters over the weekend that he was close to a final decision and further extending the payment break is still being discussed. Representative Ayana Presley, who joined Warren at the roundtable on Wednesday, hopes the relief will be significant and will ease the debt burden for as many Americans as possible.
“There is no shame in the fight,” Presley said. “It is a shame that we are not doing everything we can to alleviate the burden of this struggle.”
