A Suffolk mother who was found guilty of child abuse after her 14-week-old daughter died has been convicted.

Carly Izzy of Chadberg, near Bury St Edmunds, received a 12-month public hearing order at Norwich Crown Court.

The 36-year-old’s daughter, Elinor, died of a head injury on December 20, 2019.

She was found not guilty of allowing her daughter to die, but found guilty of negligence after a trial.

Eleanor’s father, Christopher Izzy, 31, whom she divorced, was found guilty of manslaughter and negligence.

At the same hearing, he was sentenced to 14 years in prison.

Pathologists found that Elinor had suffered a catastrophic brain injury, “corresponding to being severely shaken,” Judge Edward Murray told the court.

The court heard Christopher Izzy of Little Thetford, Cambridgeshire, “put Elinor on her head, distracted by the barking of dogs.”

The judge told the Norwich Crown Court that he was “certain” that Izzy was the one who “inflicted all the serious injuries Elinor suffered”, including 31 rib fractures.

He said the girl’s mother “did not know (her) husband was hurting (their) baby and had done so many times”.

Prosecutor Sally House QC said the post-mortem examination showed Elinor was malnourished, had a bulging chest and reduced limb muscle mass.

The judge said that both parents “at times gave her a diluted pumpkin to drink instead of milk” and described it as “completely inappropriate” that she was given a cream cake.

He said both parents had “abandoned” Elinor “at least once in a while”.

Elizabeth Marsh QC, mitigating for Carly Izzy, said Elinor “was killed without action or inaction” by her mother.

“She feels extremely guilty for failing to protect her baby from the man who cheated on her,” she said.

Sally O’Neill QC, mitigating responsibility for Christopher Easy, said he would “transfer to his grave the knowledge of what caused his daughter’s injuries”.

She describes him as a “very inexperienced father.”

Elinor was taken to hospital on December 18, 2019, after being found inappropriate at the family home in Morton on Hill, Norfolk.

A scan showed she had significant head trauma and recent bleeding between her skull and brain.

She was later transferred from Norwich Hospital to Adenbrook Hospital in Cambridge, where doctors confirmed she had suffered a catastrophic brain injury.

However, she died two days later.

Tests showed that Elinor suffered bleeding in her brain in three separate cases, the last within 48 hours of being admitted to hospital.

The pathological examination of the Ministry of Interior established the cause of her death as a head injury.

Carly Izzy’s public procurement requires her to participate in a specific program of activities.
