Suspected car theft found in a building on the Northwestern campus in Chicago, active threat ends – NBC Chicago

Northwestern University confirmed that the active threat on its Chicago campus ended Monday afternoon after police caught a car theft suspect fleeing a campus building, prompting the university to issue a security alert.

In a text message to community members around 2 p.m., Northwestern warned of an active threat, advising people to flee, hide and fight, take shelter and lock and / or barricade doors. At the time, Chicago police were looking for at least one suspect who fled after stealing a car on nearby Du Sable Lake Shore Drive.

In a tweet, Northwestern University said Chicago police tried to stop traffic near DuSable LSD and Chicago Avenue around 1:30 p.m., and police were looking for the suspect.

Northwestern tweeted in an update around 2:30 p.m. that the active threat was over and there was no longer a need for shelter. The suspect was detained in the basement of the ward building, officials said.
