Symptoms of Omicron vs. delta COVID: The biggest difference revealed

Omicron and delta variants of the new coronavirus have some major differences when it comes to the symptoms of COVID-19, a new study confirms.

What is the difference between omicron and delta variants?

A new study of the coronavirus epidemic in the UK found that omicron is different from delta in how symptoms appear and how long people stay sick, according to Fortune.

  • “The prevalence of symptoms that characterize Omicron infection differs from that of the Delta SARS-CoV-2 variant, apparently with less lower respiratory tract involvement and less chance of hospitalization,” the authors write, according to Fortune.
  • “Our data show a shorter period of illness and potential infectivity, which should affect employment and health policies and public health councils.”

The study, published in The Lancet, used data from the ZOE COVID follow-up study to compare the symptoms of more than 4,990 people who had the delta variant with the same number of people who had the omicron variant.

Is there a difference in the symptoms of omicron and delta variant?

According to the study, there are some major differences in the symptoms of COVID-19:

  • Slightly more than half (52.7%) of delta patients had odor loss compared to 16.7% of omicron-infected patients.
  • Nearly three-quarters (70.5%) of patients with the omicron variant had a sore throat, compared with 60.8% of patients with the delta variant.
  • Nearly 2% of people with the omicron variant were hospitalized, compared to 2.6% of those with the delta variant.
