Austin City Council voted to approve a resolution that would force the city manager to adopt a minimum wage of $ 22 an hour for city officials.

During the June 16 meeting, several city workers testified that higher wages were needed because of inflation, according to FOX 7 Austin.

The resolution requires the city manager to develop a plan and schedule to increase the minimum wage to $ 22 per hour for city workers, which increases from the current $ 15 per hour.

A city spokesman told FOX 7 that the increase was necessary due to inflation.

“Providing a living wage is a constant priority for our stakeholders and our city staff. “The recovery from the pandemic and the unprecedented increase in the cost of living have highlighted the need to speed up the schedule to increase livelihoods,” he said.

If the increase is not feasible in the 2023 budget, the minimum wage will be increased “by the most significant amount possible”, according to the report.
