Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) ‘s 10 – day “intensified” security inspections of commercial trucks entering Mexico could cost Texas $ 4.2 billion in economic damage, according to the Waco-based Perryman Group. But it’s great for business in Santa Teresa, New Mexico, a border crossing just across state lines from El Paso.

Trucks were diverted through Santa Teresa when Abbott inspections slashed trade traffic at Texas border crossings, and now Mexico has decided to move a long-planned multibillion-dollar commercial rail link from Texas to New Mexico, The Dallas Morning News reported Sunday. “We will not use Texas now,” said Mexican Economy Minister Tatiana Cloutier. “We can’t leave all the eggs in one basket and be hostage to someone who wants to use trade as a political tool.”

Clouthier made the announcement in Mexico City on Thursday, a day before Abbott said it would transfer another $ 500 million from other Texas agencies to fund its broader state border initiative, Operation Lone Star, which already costs Texas more of $ 2 billion a year.

Jerry Pacheco, president of the Santa Teresa Border Industrial Association, told Morning News that Mexico has enough time to change its mind about the lucrative T-MEC Corridor trade relationship, but “the very fact that we are discussing the early stages is a positive thing. He added that “since Governor Abbott’s truck inspections have disappeared, our traffic remains higher than normal for cargo shipments in the north, which leads me to believe that what I thought would be interim solution will in fact remain in the long term “

“We are also absolutely playing border politics,” Pacheco said, “but we are playing to bring more trade from Mexico through our ports of entry into New Mexico, not to hinder trade.”
