Those experiencing an emergency in South and Central Okanagan cannot use the 911 at the moment.
In a press release from E-Comm 911, BC’s 911 dispatcher, the company said a “service outage” caused the 911 phone number to shut down on Thursday afternoon.
Those experiencing emergencies will need to call their non-emergency RCMP number. In Kelowna this number is 250-762-3300, in West Kelowna it is 250-768-2280 and in Penticton it is 250-492-4300. A complete directory of non-emergency RCMP numbers can be found here.
E-Comm says its technicians are working with Telus to determine the cause of the outage and are trying to restore the service.
People in South and Central Okanagan have been asked not to call their non-emergency lines unless they are experiencing emergencies to keep the phone lines clean.
The break comes after a similar break in the Kelowna area on April 24. E-Comm told Castanet that the outage occurred during a “planned evacuation”.
