A tense blockade at a high school in East Vancouver this week was sparked by a student carrying an ax designed for support, police said.
Officials blocked Killarney High School on Thursday morning after receiving reports that there was someone at the school armed with a weapon.
They searched classroom after classroom before finally confirming that the students were safe.
On Friday, the Vancouver Police Department revealed that the reports included an ax, which investigators have since identified as “a support worn by a student for a school project.”
“We welcome the prompt thinking and cooperation of all staff and students who believe this is an active threat to the school,” the department wrote on Twitter.
Authorities, meanwhile, are still investigating a bear spraying incident that sparked an evacuation to Killarney the day before.
Police said two teenagers entered the school, tried to attack a student and then sprayed bears, forcing about 2,000 students to drop out of class.
Nearly two dozen students and teachers were “contaminated” with the substance, police said, and some were taken to hospital as a precaution.
Authorities have identified two teenagers believed to be responsible for the incident, neither of whom is a student at Killarney.
