Students at Courtney High School were placed under a blockade that stretched after the last school bell on Monday afternoon after an anonymous threat was made to the school.
The lock at George P. Vanier High School ended around 3:30 p.m., according to the Comox Valley RCMP.
The Comox Valley RCMP tweeted shortly after 2:50 p.m. that Mounties was on site at the high school investigating the anonymous threat.
Employees were reportedly inside the school, “ensuring school safety”, according to the RCMP.
The RCMP did not release much information about the incident, but told CHEK News that early indications were that it was a “hit”, a deliberate false report designed to provoke an emergency response.
Reports have surfaced on the Internet that the school was initially detained and secured and later upgraded to a complete blockade.
A student at the school said he could see police officers with rifles moving from classroom to classroom while students sat in silence for about an hour.
Prompted by an accident near a school, detention and security is when the doors are locked to prevent people from entering the facility, and school activities continue normally during the break until they are cleared by first aid staff.
Blocks are used when there is a more immediate threat in or near a school, securing staff and students in classrooms until the situation is declared safe.
