Detective Superintendent Gary Brooks, head of Lancashire’s main police investigation department, said: of Katie Kenyon.
“Katie’s family has been told and my heart is with them at this time. We have specially trained officers who support them in this difficult time.
I would like to thank the public and the media for all the help they have given us during a long, complex and very emotional search, and I would also like to thank the partner agencies as well as all the police officers and staff who are was involved in the search for Katie.
“Although this is not the conclusion of this search, which one of us would like, I know that the family appreciates this effort.”
On Friday, 50-year-old Andrew Burfield appeared via video link from HMP Preston for a brief court hearing on the murder of Ms. Kenyon.
Burfield of Todmorden Road, Burnley, spoke only to confirm his identity during a seven-minute hearing at Preston Crown Court.
He was remanded in custody and the trial is set for November 14.
