The brave 21-year-old lost a leg and underwent surgery 18 times in two months after a horrific accident

A brave young woman from Grimsby has been living at the Royal Hull Hospital for six months after a horrific accident in which she lost her leg.

Reagan Polly, 21, had just picked up her new motorcycle an hour before the crash when she collided with a truck in Granesby last October. She suffered life-threatening injuries and was flown to hospital, where she has remained since then, undergoing 18 surgeries in just two months and losing her leg, as well as the use of one arm.

She suffered broken bones, a broken pelvis, nerve damage to her right arm and sepsis. Reagan is still awaiting reconstruction of her right arm and recovery from the nerve damage she suffered.

Reagan and her mother Kylie told Grimsby Live what life was like after the accident. Kylie said, “It really wasn’t easy to see my little girl go through something so horrible.

“I’ve been with her every step of the way, and the only thing that got me through it was Reagan’s positivity. It seems that her condition does not change her and she is again able to do things for herself.

Reagan said, “You even made us a cup of tea today, didn’t you, Mom?” She’s been in the hospital since her October incident and has been treated for multiple infections, sepsis and skin grafts. At the moment she cannot walk and has movement in only one hand.

The family has adapted their home in Grimsby to have wheelchair ramps, railings and a stair lift. They hope to get Reagan a brand new wheelchair to meet her needs and everything else she may need to live a normal life again.

Asked about her long-term goals, Reagan said: “I just want to live a good life and be really happy. I live day by day after the accident, so I had no idea what I would be able to do in the future.

“I hope to have a prosthesis on my leg soon so that I can move a little more freely and not need a wheelchair all the time. Before the incident, I really wanted to go to daycare because I love children, so maybe I’ll do it in the future, it all depends on how independent I am.

“Because of the nerve damage in my right arm, I can only use my left arm at a time, so I have to get used to it. It’s hard to have just one arm.”

Kylie Denehy, Reagan’s mother, added: “The next goal is to get Reagan back home and out of the hospital. We have been making a lot of trips to Leeds for specialist meetings since October and it would be nice to set it up again.

“We hope that in the next week or two Reagan will be discharged permanently and return home after months in hospital.”

Reagan’s family and friends are now testing their fundraising skills to raise money for a new wheelchair. The money raised will also go to pay for any additional adaptations she may need.

Kylie continued: “We have great friends who are involved in some fundraising activities to raise the money needed for some new adaptations. finish line and will provide them with the much needed drink afterwards.

“Her father and I will also do a sponsored parachute jump to raise some money, which we will finance ourselves. I’m absolutely petrified from the heights, but I’m really looking forward to it and I’ll be brave for Reagan.

“Initially we aimed to raise £ 1,500 and so far we have raised £ 3,300, which we are completely overwhelmed by. Any contribution would be so useful.
