A member of the Islamic State group that beheaded Western hostages in Iraq and Syria, dubbed the Beatles because of its British accent, has been sentenced to life in prison in the United States.
Alexandra Kotei, 38, a native of Paddington, London, stood motionless while Judge Thomas Selby Ellis handed down his sentence in Alexandria, Virginia District Court, while members of his victims’ families watched.
Kotei received a life sentence for each of the eight charges he pleaded guilty to. They have to work at the same time.
Ellis described his behavior as “outrageous, violent and inhuman.”
Speaking about Kothei’s victims, Ellis said: “These were not prisoners of war, these were not soldiers in the field. They were soldiers, but they were soldiers forever. “
Kotei pleaded guilty last year to terrorist offenses. He was deprived of British citizenship.
The judge noted that under a plea agreement, the government has committed to seeking Kotei’s transfer to the United Kingdom in 15 years. “That’s a big plus for you,” Ellis said.
