Firefighters responded to numerous calls about a smoke jet near the southeastern Quarry Park community around 8:10 p.m. Friday. The smoke cloud could be seen from many points of view and the crews were greeted by employees of the landfill near 24th Street and Quarry Park SE
Fire crews were traveling to the top of the depot, where officers were actively working to put out the blaze, a press release said Friday night.
A large bulldozer was used to put out the fire before it was damaged as the fire was put out. The operator of the machine managed to get out of the vehicle unharmed, but the fire continued to grow, forcing the fire brigade to intervene with remote water supply and hose flows.

Shortly after 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Battalion Chief Paul Frederick said most of the fire had been extinguished, but crews remained on the scene working on hotspots.
“They are still stubborn because we have to use heavy equipment to dig up the dirt. The fire is burning there, ‘said Frederick. “But right now we have no problem with smoke coming from the pile.”
He said crews used heavy equipment to reach the fire as well as suffocate it with dirt while dosing it with large amounts of water.
Environment Canada issued a special air quality declaration in response to the fire, warning that there were increased levels of air pollution, especially in southeastern Calgary, which was removed after the fire was put out.
