As metaphors pass for a prime minister under the basket, it is difficult to surpass. Boris Johnson was late for his first interview with ITV on Tuesday morning Good morning Great Britain because he was seriously ill. “He had food poisoning,” the assistant explained. “He was vomiting and had to change his suit because he felt sick on his lapel.”
Before the interview began, the frantic staff at number 10 arranged a “distress signal” with interviewer Susanna Reed so that Johnson could escape if necessary. “If she raises a glass of water, Susanna will say something and they will interrupt the cameras so that she can escape again to get sick,” said one of those present.
