The House of Representatives passed a bill giving congressional workers the right to organize and bargain collectively on Tuesday night, much to the applause of House Democrats.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi quickly praised the bill’s “historic” passage after it cleared the hall by 217-202 votes.
“Today, the House has taken historic action, paving the way for congressional officials to choose to unite in a union,” she said in a statement. “By empowering employees to stand up for themselves and each other, we are taking an important step to ensure that the House is best able to serve the American people.”
