The Kremlin has blocked the Russian website of The Moscow Times for covering the war

Russia has blocked access to The Moscow Times’ Russian-language service after publishing a report on the invasion of Ukraine, the online newspaper reported on Friday.

Why it matters: The Moscow Times is the latest of many independent media outlets to face a backlash after the publication of information about the war that contradicts the Kremlin’s claims.

Background: The Moscow Times said Roskomnadzor, Russia’s communications supervisor, has ordered service providers to block Russian-language newspaper services over a report of police refusing riots to fight in Ukraine and return to Russia.

  • It said at least 40 local and foreign websites had been blocked by the oversight body since the invasion began on February 24.
  • The English-language service of the Moscow Times is still available.
