Ukraine said on Friday it had exchanged several captured soldiers with Russia in the south of a war-torn country, where Moscow’s invading forces have reaped their biggest gains.
“After intense negotiations, we managed to reach agreements for the exchange of prisoners near the village of Posad-Pokrovskoye, where four Russian servicemen were exchanged for our five,” said the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense.
Russian troops have taken the city of Kherson, the administrative capital of the region of the same name, where the exchange announced on Friday took place.
The exchange followed a statement from Kyiv on Thursday for the fourth prisoner exchange since Russian forces invaded Ukraine on February 24.
Deputy Prime Minister Irina Vereshchuk said a total of 30 people from Ukraine had taken part in the exchange.
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky this week proposed replacing pro-Kremlin tycoon Viktor Medvedchuk, one of Ukraine’s richest men arrested by Kyiv after escaping house arrest, with Ukrainians captured by Russia.
