A man who was in critical care four hours after being arrested on Sunday has died.
The man was arrested Sunday night in Moncton, RCMP said, then went into “medical distress” four hours later. Police said he was listed in critical condition Monday.
RCMP announced the man’s death on Friday, but did not say what day he died.
Nova Scotia’s Major Incident Response Team is investigating the actions of the officers involved.
SIRT’s mandate is to investigate serious incidents arising from police action, including death, serious injury, sexual assault, domestic violence and “other matters of significant public interest”.
Few other details are provided
On Sunday, around 11 p.m., police responded to a “disturbance call” on Evergreen Drive, RCMP said.
When they arrived, “police encountered a male subject who was taken into custody without incident,” according to a news release.
“Approximately four hours later, the individual was found to be in serious condition and transported to hospital.”
RCMP have not shared any other details about what happened that night, including what prompted the force to refer the case to SIRT.
“Support services were offered to the members involved in the incident.”
Police also did not say if any officers were suspended or placed on administrative duty.
2nd case referred to SIRT this month
This is the second investigation into RCMP conduct referred to SIRT this month.
On Nov. 17, the RCMP said it is asking the SIRT to review the behavior of police officers with a person who is mentally disturbed.
On Nov. 16, officers responded to a report of a mentally disturbed person around 10:30 a.m. in Riverview. When they arrived, officers “tried to calm them down,” RCMP said.
“Police were concerned for their safety and attempted to detain the individual under the Mental Health Act, but the individual resisted,” RCMP said. “An altercation ensued between the person and two policemen.
The force said the person was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and a police officer was also treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
New Brunswick does not have its own police watchdog agency. The Nova Scotia SIRT is currently reviewing four cases of police misconduct in New Brunswick and has released reports on two more this year.
