Officials say the COVID-19 epidemic at the Lake Woods District Hospital is already under control.
Lake of the Woods County Hospital activated its pandemic plan on April 15 after two patients at the hospital tested positive for COVID-19. Restrictions on visitors were introduced immediately and remain in force today, with limited exceptions for end-of-life patients.
By April 18, the hospital announced that the outbreak had grown to nine patients, six of whom had contracted COVID-19 through the outbreak in the 3rd Eastern Ward. The hospital noted that they were also facing a “critical” lack of staff at the time.
The hospital now says the outbreak is restricted to Hospital 2E and there are no new hospital cases of the virus since the outbreak on April 22.
“The hard work of LWDH staff and professional staff, including isolating patients, asymptomatic testing and restricting movement between departments, is taking control of the outbreak at this time,” hospital officials said in a statement.
Currently, the hospital says there are five patients in hospital due to the outbreak, and four other residents have been admitted due to community transmission, but those numbers can change daily.
“Hospital management would like to acknowledge the LWDH team for the incredible work they have done to control this outbreak. It was not easy and this is an extreme challenge not only because of the pandemic, but also because of the unprecedented shortage of staff. We thank you, as well as the Northwest Health Unit, for their support as we move on to the next steps, ”added the management.
The hospital notes that its infection control team is working with members of the Northwest Health Unit to investigate the origins of the outbreak and provide effective control strategies.
