The Conservative Party is losing support in the Red Wall after the “party door” scandal, a new poll shows as Boris Johnson prepares for losses in local elections next month.
A new poll shows that the Tories already have the support of only 38% of Red Wall voters, less than 56% in the last general election in 2019.
The finding calls into question the stability of Mr Johnson’s profits in the Red Wall areas and suggests that the Tories will lose a significant number of seats on the local election council on 5 May.
The poll, conducted by the More in Common think tank for The Telegraph, also shows a collapse in support in areas of the Blue Wall populated by traditional Tory voters in southern England, where Liberal Democrats are turning to conservative seats.
The collapse in support of the Conservatives comes after Mr Johnson was fined by the metropolitan police for attending his own birthday on Downing Street in June 2020 and the prospect of new fines.
Voters are divided over the future of the prime minister
The poll also found that 61 percent of the public believe he should resign over the dispute, although voters are divided on when to leave.
Forty-two percent of those polled said he should resign now, but 19 percent said he should stay in office as the government responds to the war in Ukraine.
