Fight
- Russian forces shelled Ukraine’s second-largest city, Kharkiv, and devastated several cities in eastern Ukraine.
- At least three civilians have been killed in the Russian shelling of the city of Vuhledar in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine, the Ukrainian president’s office said. Some other areas of Donetsk were under constant fire and regional authorities were trying to evacuate civilians from frontline areas, the statement said.
- Ukraine’s Bayraktar drone has destroyed two Russian Raptor-class patrol ships in the Black Sea, Ukraine’s military chief said.
- Russia plans to immediately “annex” the two eastern regions of Ukraine after failing to overthrow the government in Kyiv, a senior US official said.
- More than 200 civilians are still hiding with fighters in a huge steel mine in the southern Ukrainian city of Mariupol, the mayor said.
- The UK’s defense ministry says Russia has failed to take advantage of Ukraine’s more than decade-long military modernization program.
Diplomacy
- The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Boris Johnson will address the Ukrainian parliament – the first by a foreign leader since Russia’s invasion on February 24 – to welcome the country’s resistance as its “best time”.
- He is also expected to announce nearly $ 400 million in military aid to Ukraine.
- Russian football clubs have been banned by UEFA from participating in the Champions League and all other European competitions next season, according to the governing body of European football.
Business and economics
- Berlin will be ready to support an immediate European Union ban on Russian oil imports, two German ministers said.
- To keep the bloc united, the EU executive can offer Hungary and Slovakia exemptions or transitional periods and a ban phase until the end of the year.
- Foreign financial assistance will ensure the stability of Ukraine’s central bank reserves as the country copes with the economic shock of the Russian invasion, said central bank governor Kirill Shevchenko.
- Italy aims to end its dependence on Russian gas by the second half of 2024, said the Italian Minister for the Environment.
- Pope Francis has said he requested a meeting in Moscow with Russian President Vladimir Putin to try to end the war in Ukraine, but received no response, Reuters reported.
